Brazil's Rich Marine Biodiversity at Risk

Turtles, a 200-million-year-old species that has witnessed the evolution of the Earth, are facing an unprecedented survival crisis globally, and Brazil, as one of the world’s most important sea turtle habitats, is no exception.
Brazil is home to 5 of the world’s 7 sea turtle species, all of which are threatened with extinction (except the green turtle, which is classified as near-threatened but still in need of protection). For decades, these ancient creatures have relied on Brazil’s 7,491 kilometers of coastline to nest and reproduce, with the northeastern coast and Espírito Santo state being core nesting grounds. Espírito Santo alone is the main nesting site for loggerhead turtles and a refuge for critically endangered leatherback turtles.
However, with the development of coastal cities, offshore oil and gas projects, and port construction, artificial light pollution has become one of the most hidden and harmful threats to their survival.
How Light Pollution Harms Sea Turtles
As you may know, coastal and offshore artificial light disrupts their night nesting and misleads hatchlings inland from the sea. Female sea turtles choose dark beaches to lay eggs at night to avoid predators, but bright artificial lights will deter them from coming ashore to nest; newly hatched turtle hatchlings rely on the faint light of the moon and stars to find their way to the sea, but short-wavelength lights (such as white light, blue light) will confuse them, making them crawl towards roads, parking lots, or forests inland, where they face the risk of being hit by vehicles, eaten by predators, or dying of dehydration and sun exposure.
A survey shows that 63.7% of Brazil’s nesting beach segments have experienced a significant increase in light brightness, and more than 60% of reproductive hotspots are exposed to light pollution, which has a negative impact on the survival of olive ridley and leatherback turtles.
In response to this, Brazil has launched the 3rd cycle of the National Action Plan for Sea Turtle Conservation, and Projeto Tamar (Brazil’s national sea turtle conservation program) has also promoted relevant laws and regulations, restricting artificial light on key nesting beaches to mitigate the impact on sea turtles.
This is why turtle-friendly amber light has become an indispensable choice for coastal, offshore, and turtle reserve lighting in Brazil.
Why Amber Light?
Scientific research and practical experience have proved that amber light is the most suitable light source for turtle habitats for two core reasons:
- First, amber light emits long-wavelength light (above 560 nanometers), which sea turtles are not sensitive to, unlike white light and blue light, it will not disrupt the nesting behavior of female turtles or mislead hatchlings, allowing them to maintain their natural navigation instincts and safely find their way to the sea.

In fact, more and more coastal cities in Brazil (such as Itapemirim, Guarapari in Espírito Santo) have begun to require the use of amber light in coastal lighting to protect sea turtles during the nesting season (September to March each year).
